Updated Player Homework

There are several things we have discussed and worked on in practice so far that we will really be focusing on going forward.

Before practice on Friday 12/2, please watch the videos below as a reminder of the topics we will be working on.  Please watch carefully because these will be a huge help over the next several practices.

This link will bring you to the first video....Breakout Techniques and Tips

Great New Video Up

We've been working a lot on the breakout lately and I just posted a great new video on the subject on the video page.  I would strongly urge you to check it out along with the homework video I posted yesterday.  Both are very important.

Player Homework!!

Keeping possession of the puck in the other team's zone is important so we can do two things:

1.  Get scoring chances on the other team's goalie
2.  Keep the puck away from our goalie.

In order to do that, one of the things we have talked about is cycling the puck in the offensive zone.  Please watch the video below to prepare for our practice on Friday 12/2.  If you would like to watch it in full screen, you can follow this link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnnV78zSpXk

Make sure you watch carefully!  This will definitely help you in practice!

New Video Page

I have posted a new Videos page that contains several good videos the kids should watch. They all have to do with various aspects of the game that we have or will be working on.  Since many kids are visual learners, it should be good for them to see it on film.  It may make more sense.  Enjoy.

Great Video for Forwards!

Here's a great video I found talking about a lot of the things we've been discussing over the last few weeks with the breakout.  In practice we were talking about opening up to provide a target and put yourself in position to move up ice. Pay close attention to the 1:30-2:00 section of the video.

Niagara Falls Tournament

The coaches would like to enter the team in the Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles tournament in Niagara Falls, NY on President's Day Weekend (February 18-20th) which is the first weekend of February vacation for most players.

Please check the details of the tournament on the Niagara Falls Tournament page and confirm with the coaches whether you will be attending.  This is a great tournament and a great trip, and we would like to have the entire team share in the experience.  Please confirm by November 9th so we can finalize arrangements.

Bruins Game Video - Offensive Triangle

This video is a great example from the Bruins game this week of something we've been working on in practice and games - creating that triangle in the offensive zone.

Watch how the puck carrier (F1) takes the puck wide, the 2nd guy into the zone (F2) goes to the net and the last guy into the zone (F3) stays higher in the zone as a trailer.  Look for the triangle.  It works!!

Toronto Decision

After team discussion and vote, we have decided to cancel our December trip to Toronto due to uncertainty with the number of teams committed to the tournament.

Instead, the coaching staff would like to enter a travel tournament sometime during the February vacation week. Any options that we examine will be within driving distance.

To take the place of the Christmas week trip to Toronto, we would like to enter the team in the Jr. Warriors Select Holiday Showcase tournament in Haverhill, MA from December 27-30.  This will cut down on cost and time away during the week.  Based on the game schedule, we can reserve a block of rooms at a local hotel for a few nights to make the commute a little easier.

Toronto Page

There is a new page up that will contain any updates on the Toronto tournament.  This will include all fundraising activities.  Please check it out and assist in any way you can.  Every little bit helps to drive the cost of the tournament down for everyone.

Terriers Fall to the Caps - New Pictures Posted

The Terriers followed up the big season opening win on Saturday with another good effort on Sunday.  Despite the deceptive 4-0 score, the Terriers had great opportunities to even the score but just couldn't convert.  Collin McCormack, Kyle Magner, Jimmy DeLano, and Colin Burns all played strong D.  Aiden Green, Spencer Pava, and John Norton played well up front but weren't able to get the puck past a good Caps goaltending pair.  At the end of the day though, the Terriers showed they were a different team than last year and can compete with any team in the league.

New pictures from this weekend's games have been posted on the Pictures page.  The complete collection can be viewed at www.viewthrutheglass.smugmug.com.  If you would like any of the prints, be sure to use the discount code TERRIERS for special pricing.

Big Win to Open the Season!

The Terriers opened up their season with a big win 4-3 over the Boston Bandits.  Robert Westwater had a great day in net making some huge saves in a close game.  The goal scorers for the Terriers were Spencer Pava, Collin McCormack, Brendan Campbell, and the game winner by Aiden Green.  It was definitely a team win and all the boys played great.  Next up, Providence Capitals on Sunday 9/11 at 10:40am at the Canton SportsPlex.

Collin McCormack and Jimmy DeLano hang out and play street hockey after the big win!

USA Hockey Checking Manual

I know there have been many questions about whether body checking will be allowed at the Pee Wee level in the EHF this year.  My understanding, as of right now, is that it will.

USA Hockey has published a body checking manual that may be helpful.  As coaches, we are going to go through the process of preparing the kids in practice for body contact this season.  I figured I would post the link to the manual here because it may also be helpful for you to take a look and go over some things with your kids.  I know that some kids learn better by seeing it in print.

The link is below.

Now Up: Summer League Plans!

The coaching staff would like to enter the team in the 3 on 3 league at the Boch Ice Center.  The league will be on one consistent weeknight through the summer and be centrally located for most families.  This is a great option because it allows the kids to have fun, be creative, and keep skating in a less structured, no pressure environment. .

Please see the Summer 2011 page for more details.
